Traditional Rice
The rice cultivation has a long and parallel relationship with the country’s history and culture and Sri Lankan has practised an agriculture-based lifestyle for the past 3 millennia. According to the evidence collected through written history and archaeology, rice cultivation of the island goes back to the period of 900-600 BC.
Pokkali (ෙපාක්කාලි)
Pokkali ist eine beliebte rote Reissorte, die traditionell in Sri Lanka angebaut wird. Der Pflanzenhalm ist etwa 130 cm hoch und trägt etwa 10 Triebe pro Pflanze. Diese Ernte kann innerhalb von 3½ Monaten nach der Aussaat geerntet werden. Es ist tolerant gegenüber Salzgehalt im Boden. Pokkali wird als Mutterpflanze bei der Sortenverbesserung von Reis verwendet. Der potenzielle Ertrag beträgt etwa 60 bis 80 Scheffel pro Hektar. Derzeit wird es entlang der südwestlichen Küstenzone angebaut und ist eine Grundnahrungsmittelpflanze in den Distrikten Hambantota und Puttalam , wo der Salzgehalt des Bodens hoch ist. Wissenschaftliche Studien haben Hinweise auf medizinische Eigenschaften gefunden, die für die Behandlung von oxidativem Stress nützlich sind. Die Ergebnisse deuten auch auf seine Fähigkeit hin, bestimmte schädliche Bakterien zu hemmen. Außerdem ist es reich an Proteinen. Der Verzehr zusammen mit der Kleie ist wichtig, um solch wertvolle ernährungsphysiologische und medizinische Eigenschaften zu erhalten.
