Traditional Rice
The rice cultivation has a long and parallel relationship with the country’s history and culture and Sri Lankan has practised an agriculture-based lifestyle for the past 3 millennia. According to the evidence collected through written history and archaeology, rice cultivation of the island goes back to the period of 900-600 BC.
Dahanala (දහනල)
Dahanala ist eine langkörnige rote Reissorte, die traditionell in Sri Lanka angebaut wird. Der Halm ist etwa 120 cm hoch. Diese Ernte kann innerhalb von 3½ Monaten nach der Aussaat geerntet werden. Die Anzahl der Triebe pro Pflanze beträgt 4 bis 5, was im Vergleich zu anderen traditionellen Reissorten gering ist. Auch der Ertrag ist mit 30 bis 35 Bushel pro Acre gering. Dahanala wird in der Feuchtzone häufig angebaut. Es ist anfällig für die Reisbrandkrankheit. Allerdings ist er resistent gegen den Keimlingsschädling namens Trips. Traditionell wird Dahana-Reis zur Zubereitung von Brei verwendet.
