Gonabaru ist eine beliebte mittelkörnige Reissorte, die traditionell in Sri Lanka angebaut wird. Die Pflanze erreicht eine maximale Höhe von 140 cm. Diese Ernte kann innerhalb von 5 Monaten nach der Aussaat geerntet werden. Die Anzahl der Triebe pro Pflanze beträgt 3 bis 5, was im Vergleich zu anderen traditionellen Reissorten gering ist. Der potenzielle Ertrag ist im Vergleich zu ähnlichen Sorten recht gut und schwankt zwischen etwa 50 und 60 Scheffel pro Hektar. Es wird sowohl in der Trocken- als auch in der Feuchtzone angebaut. Wissenschaftliche Studien haben Hinweise auf medizinische Eigenschaften gefunden, die für die Behandlung von Diabetes und oxidativem Stress nützlich sind. Darüber hinaus ist es eine gute Zinkquelle. Der Verzehr zusammen mit der Kleie ist wichtig, um solch wertvolle ernährungsphysiologische und medizinische Eigenschaften zu erhalten.
