Madathawalu ist eine sehr beliebte rote Kurzkornreissorte, die traditionell in Sri Lanka angebaut wird. Die Pflanze erreicht eine maximale Höhe von 130 cm. Diese Ernte kann innerhalb von 4 Monaten nach der Aussaat geerntet werden. Madathawalu trägt 20 bis 30 Triebe pro Pflanze und gilt als eine der ertragreichsten traditionellen Reissorten in Sri Lanka. Der potenzielle Ertrag beträgt etwa 110 Scheffel pro Hektar und wird derzeit in allen Teilen Sri Lankas angebaut. Es wird berichtet, dass sich diese Sorte gut als Bio-Pflanze eignet. Traditionell wird angenommen, dass sie das menschliche Immunsystem stärkt und zur Behandlung von Diabetes eingesetzt wird. Wissenschaftliche Studien haben Hinweise auf medizinische Eigenschaften gefunden, die für die Behandlung von Diabetes und oxidativem Stress nützlich sind.
