Traditional Rice
The rice cultivation has a long and parallel relationship with the country’s history and culture and Sri Lankan has practised an agriculture-based lifestyle for the past 3 millennia. According to the evidence collected through written history and archaeology, rice cultivation of the island goes back to the period of 900-600 BC.
Ma Wee (මා වී)
Ma Wee ist eine rote Reissorte, die traditionell in Sri Lanka angebaut wird. Das Korn variiert in Größe und Form von kurzen und runden Sorten bis hin zu langen mittelgroßen Sorten. Sie ist eine der höchsten kultivierten Reispflanzen und erreicht eine maximale Höhe von 350 cm. Diese Ernte kann innerhalb von 5 bis 6 Monaten nach der Aussaat geerntet werden. Es entblößt 15 bis 20 Triebe pro Pflanze und liefert etwa 65 bis 70 Scheffel pro Hektar. Ma Wee ist eine fotoempfindliche Pflanze, die während der Maha-Saison angebaut wird. Es wird häufig in überschwemmungsgefährdeten Gebieten in der Tiefland-Feuchtzone und der Zwischenzone angebaut. Traditionell wird angenommen, dass Ma Wee medizinische Eigenschaften besitzt. Es wird zur Behandlung von Fettleibigkeit, Diabetes , Tuberkulose und als wirksames Mittel zur Entschlackung eingesetzt. Wissenschaftliche Studien haben Hinweise auf einen hohen Protein- und Antioxidantiengehalt gefunden. Darüber hinaus ist es eine gute Quelle für Eisen und Zink.
