Bezirk Mannar
Der Distrikt Mannar liegt im Nordwesten Sri Lankas in der Nordprovinz . Die Fläche beträgt 1.996 Quadratkilometer. Mannar ist die Hauptstadt des Distrikts Mannar. Es wird von einem Stadtrat verwaltet. Die Stadt liegt auf der Insel Mannar mit Blick auf den Golf von Mannar und beherbergt den historischen Ketheeswaram-Tempel . Früher war die Stadt als Zentrum der Perlenfischerei bekannt, was im Periplus des Erythräischen Meeres aus dem 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr. erwähnt wird. Mannar ist bekannt für seine Affenbrotbäume und seine Festung , die 1560 von den Portugiesen erbaut und 1658 von den Holländern eingenommen und wieder aufgebaut wurde. Die Stadtmauern und Bastionen sind intakt, das Innere ist jedoch weitgehend zerstört. Optisch wird die moderne Stadt von ihren Kirchen, Hindu-Tempeln und Moscheen dominiert. Die katholische Kirche hat eine Diözese mit Sitz in der Stadt. Mit der Bahn ist die Stadt über die Mannar-Linie mit dem Rest Sri Lankas verbunden. Es wurde während des Bürgerkriegs in Sri Lanka zwischen 1983 und 2009 von der LTTE besetzt.
Der Bezirk Mannar ist einzigartig in seiner Vegetation und Tierwelt und steht im Kontrast zum Rest Sri Lankas. Mannar Island ist einer der wenigen Orte in Sri Lanka, an denen Affenbrotbäume gedeihen. Affen lieben die Früchte und daher wird der Baum manchmal auch als Affenbrotbaum bezeichnet.
Der Dugong ist ein mittelgroßes Meeressäugetier, das in der Mannar Bay, Nachchikuda, auf der Insel Jaffna und in der Nähe der Adamsbrücke vorkommt. Der IUCN-Erhaltungsstatus ist aufgrund übermäßiger Nahrungsjagd und versehentlichem Fang in Fischernetzen gefährdet.
Eine vom Aussterben bedrohte Vogelspinnenart namens Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica wurde erstmals in Sri Lanka in der Region Mannar gefunden. Dies war das erste Mal, dass die Spinne von außerhalb Indiens nachgewiesen wurde. Das Vankalai-Vogelschutzgebiet, das im Rahmen der Ramsar-Konvention international als wichtiges Gebiet für Feuchtgebietsvögel anerkannt ist, liegt auf dem Festland südlich der Insel Mannar.
